Akaslompolo is located in the Finnish ski resort of Yllas. Located beside a lake (the name "Akaslompolo" means "small lake" in ancient Lappish), this quaint town is a hive of activity during the winter months, with activities ranging from dog-sledding to cross country skiing available. During the summer however, Akaslompolo becomes a quiet sleepy village with seemingly little activity going on. Don't let this deceive you though as although, primarily a ski resort, there are a host of activities to do during the summer from mountain biking and hiking to canoeing and fishing. Yllas is part of the Pallas-Yllas national park, recognised for its outstanding natural beauty and is truly a stunning place for a relaxing summer retreat.

Ylals has the largest ski resort in Finland with the more kilometres of ski runs than any other resort. There are ski runs to suit any level of skier or snowboarder and rental places situated all over Akaslompolo as well as at the ski resort itself. Situated around Yllas are also hundreds of kilometres of cross country ski tracks for those wanting a more relaxed approach to skiing and a chance to explore the forests and wilderness of the surrounding national park.
