Millions to be invested in Yllas ski resorts

16 million Euros in total will be invested to develop the area of Yllas, introducing new lifts and ticket systems. Pertti Yliniemi, Managing Director of Lapland Hotels has praised the decision of Finnish Lapland TE-Centre (Employment and Economic development centre) to boost investment in the area.

Pertti Yliniemi is now encouraging Kolari Municipality to confirm plans for development quickly.

The 16 million Euro investment programme will start in Yllas, situated in the municipality of Kolari in Finnish Lapland. The sum will be divided between Akaslompolo village (situated on the northern side of the Yllas fell) and Yllasjarvi (on the southern side of the fell).

The TE-centre has made decisions concerning the investment ventures. Iso-Ylläs Ltd will receive about 2,14 million Euros and Ylläs Ski Ltd about 1,71 million Euros, totaling 3,65 million Euros, already more than one third of all investment allowance allocated this year in Lapland.

“I would like to thank the Ministry of Trade and Industry for the way in which they have focused their investment allowance. Ylläs is an important tourist destination and now the development can gain momentum.” tells Pertti Yliniemi, Managing Director of Lapland Hotels. He also praised Ylläs’ highest ski slopes in Lapland, fabulous scenery and wide net of skiing tracks.

“Now we have to get the decision-makers of the municipality of Kolari to involve the development of Ylläs. We hope the municipality of Kolari will quickly begin the city planning of this area and that the development will gain more speed and wider dimensions” says Mr. Yliniemi.

Lapland Hotels own Ylläs Ski, which operate the ski slopes in Äkäslompolo and also Äkäshotel and Ylläskaltio hotels. Yliniemi did not confirm details of the projects. Ylläs Ski and Iso-Ylläs have agreed to publish their ventures together at the end of August.

Finland’s second gondola-lift?

Kauppalehit has been informed that the investing period will be over two years. The forthcoming ski season will see the introduction of a new chairlift and new slopes in Äkäslompolo. Skidatas, a new “freemotion”-ticket system, will also be in use next winter, plus a Hesburger-fast food restaurant will arrive next to the hills in Ylläsjärvi.

The majority of investments will be implemented during the 2007-2008 ski season. The second phase of projects will include the second gondola-lift in Finland, many restaurants, hotel expansion and even more slopes.

Levi ski resort situated in municipality of Kittilä has also received a remarkable investment allowance. Levi Ski Resort Ltd will acquire 1,5 million Euros, Levin Luontokeskus Ltd will receive 1,3 million Euros and Hullu Poro Ltd 0,4 million Euros.
